68, under the cobblestones… the cops

In may 1968, students and workers barricade the streets of Paris. De Gaulle and the government fear that they may lose control over the French capital to an insurrection, and mobilise policemen, gendarmes, and riot squads to face the protesters.  Posterity will remember mainly the faces of the protest movement, forgetting about the men that faced them. As the shield of the Republic, they suffered insults and were thrown cobblestones and molotov cocktails. But despite the escalation of the violence, a bloodbath was avoided.
